What is a Media Filter and how does it work? What is a Media Filter and how does it work?
Media filters consists of a tank which contains a filter media, whether it be sand, glass, zeolite or some other media. The water from your pump pushes water from the top of the tank, through this media and effectively 'straining' the debris out of the water at a very fine scale. The filtered water then gets pushed through the underdrain (laterals) then move back up the centre stem, and the water returns to the pool. Media filters have the added feature of being able to 'backwash' which runs water through the opposite direction effectively washing out the debris caught by the water flow of the pump. These type of filters are by far the easiest to clean and maintain.
